What A Homeowners Insurance Cover

When you purchase homeowners insurance, you do so to protect your home and property from unsuspecting damage. Did you know that your homeowner’s insurance policy can also cover other types of legal liability as well?  Dashner Law Firm wants our clients to always be informed on how to better protect themselves from liability. Here is a brief overview of homeowners insurance and what it can cover.

Personal Liability Coverage

This type of coverage is usually standard in a homeowners insurance policy. Personal liability coverage will help pay damages to people injured by you or due to an unsafe condition on your property. While we do our best to keep our home safe, sometimes accidents do happen. When someone is injured on your property, medical bills and lost wages can add up to thousands of dollars. Luckily, if you are insured, the coverage should kick in and cover the damages.

Check for Exclusions

There are some types of damage that your homeowner’s insurance policy will not cover. It is important that you thoroughly read your policy to clearly understand what is covered and what is not. Most policies exclude intentional injuries, injuries that arise from business activities, or damages caused by your car.

Umbrella Liability Policies

If you want additional liability coverage, you can purchase supplemental liability coverage under a personal umbrella liability policy. This policy can expand coverage so you are not at risk of losing assets or be on the hook for large judgments against you for injuries that occur on your property. It may be worth having expanded coverage if you are apt to have more visitors to your home or property.
