Summertime is a great time to get outside and cycle, but you also need to stay safe on your bike. There are many personal injuries caused by unsafe bicycle riding or negligent actions of other drivers. There are some simple things that you can do to lessen your risk of a bicycle accident and potentially serious injuries significantly.

Wear Your Helmet

Wearing your helmet is the most important thing you can do to stay safe on your bike and lessen your chances of experiencing a serious or fatal injury. The majority of people who suffer catastrophic traumatic brain injuries are those riders who were not wearing a helmet, or not wearing a helmet properly. Remember when you get on your bike to strap on your helmet, it could save your life.

Be Visible

The most common cause of car-on-bike accidents is poor visibility. Make sure to wear bright-colored clothing, follow the rules of the road, and if you are riding in the evening, wear reflective belts and use lights. Using proper hand movements can assist drivers in anticipating your movements and further increase your visibility to other drivers. Never assume that a vehicle sees you, always double-check and give yourself enough space so that you can avoid a collision if at all possible.

Never Ride While Intoxicated

While biking is a great way to get around, the same rules with drinking apply to operating your bicycle. If you would not be safe to drive, you are not safe to ride. Take a taxi or arrange for a sober driver if you have been drinking. In many states, riding a bike while intoxicated is the same as a DUI. Being intoxicated also increases your risk of being involved in a serious bike accident. So stay safe on your bike and don’t drink and ride!
